Sliced Beef in Spicy Soup

Sliced beef in spicy soup is a popular dish found in many Chinese restaurants in the United States. It is typically made with thinly sliced beef, vegetables, and a spicy broth. The soup is often served with rice or noodles.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound flank steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (1-inch) piece ginger, minced
  • 1 (14.5-ounce) can beef broth
  • 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
  • 1/2 cup chopped red bell pepper
  • 1/4 cup chopped carrots
  • 1/4 cup chopped celery
  • 1 tablespoon Sriracha sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • Instructions

    1. In a medium bowl, combine the beef, cornstarch, soy sauce, rice wine, sesame oil, black pepper, and salt. Toss to coat.

    2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the beef and cook, stirring occasionally, until browned on all sides.

    3. Add the onion, garlic, and ginger to the pot and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion is softened.

    4. Add the beef broth, tomatoes, green bell pepper, red bell pepper, carrots, celery, Sriracha sauce, five-spice powder, cumin, coriander, and turmeric to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.

    5. Serve the soup hot with rice or noodles.

    Tips

  • For a spicier soup, add more Sriracha sauce to taste.
  • If you don't have flank steak, you can use another type of thinly sliced beef, such as sirloin or top round.
  • You can also add other vegetables to the soup, such as mushrooms, zucchini, or bok choy.
  • Serve the soup with a side of steamed rice or noodles.
