Although previously made and sold in Canada, Crown Royal is now made in Gimli, Manitoba, at the brand's distillery in Amaranth, Ontario. The brand's labels today display the label "Made in Canada" and "Imported," indicating that they are manufactured abroad and sold in the United States.
Crown Royal was introduced in 1939 by Samuel Bronfman, founder of Seagram, for the British and American markets, just before World War II broke out. It was created to be a very elegant version of the Canadian whiskey Seagram had been selling in Canada since 1908, and it was packed in a cut-glass decanter with a royal crown logo on the bottle.
Crown Royal Canadian whiskey was marketed as having a smooth quality due to aging, with an attractive bottle design and precise, uniform pourage from glass bottles.
According to an advertising campaign from around 1960, a "drinking man's drink," denoted by a "crown" of foam on the rim of the glass, was used as its slogan. Today's brand manager is Ned Duggan.
The brand's core product is its flagship Crown Royal Deluxe, sold in a distinctive cut-glass bottle that was originally designed by the glass company Corvington, and its bottle formula was tweaked to make the bottle more distinguishable and difficult to create. In 1950, Crown Royal was released with a small amount of alcohol, 80 proof, in regular and "split" 1.75-liter and 1.0-liter bottles. In 1964, Crown Royal Special Reserve was released at 93.5 proof, while the regular version increased inproof to 90 in 1966. The brand was relaunched in 1989 by trying to capitalize on the 1980s trend of premium Canadian whiskey and the high popularity of several whiskies served on the rocks. Since then, the brand's flavor has changed, and Canadian whiskey expert Davin de Kergommeaux states that it is smoother and less robust than it once was. The main components are a mix of some 50 whiskey batches, which create "a smooth, sweet almost honey-rich flavor, robust whiskey with body, depth, and structure, an oaky richness, and a dry, tangy, spicy, and lingering finish," according to Crown Royal's tasting notes.
If you want to try something else in the whiskey family, I suggest trying Crown Royal Regal Apple and Crown Royal Rye.
Crown Royal Regal Apple, a new extension variant released in September 2014, is flavored with apple flavors and baked into a crisp, clean whiskey with a hint of sweet and crisp apple flavor, a subtle vanilla flavor, and a smooth, slightly sweet finish with hints of caramel.
Crown Royal Rye, which launched in August 2018, is the first variety added to the Canada-based whiskey portfolio in over 20 years. It is a blend of Canadian rye and whiskey, flavored with Canadian rye, apricot, and subtle notes.
